1789- The French Revolution begins with the storming of Bastille. This leads to the end of monarchy in France and the foundation of democratic government within the country. This was a time of turmoil and confusion and lasted until 1797 when the Treaty of Campo Formio was signed, containing the problems of Revolutionary France.
1804- France forms an empire, with the Senate electing Napoleon Bonaparte as the Emperor. This empire grows to be one of the the largest in world history.
1815- Napoleon is exiled and the House of Bourbon is restored in the Second Restoration. Louis- Philippe is coronated as King of France, reinstating the monarchy system.
1848- King Louis-Philippe is forced to abdicate and flee to England, thus ending the monarchical system in France. Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte is elected President of France in the formation of the First Republic. 1914-1918- Germany originally declared war on France, officially starting the Great War, or World War I. France was heavily involved in this war, and lost a lot of soldiers and civilians in the process. The Treaty that officially ended the war was signed in Versailles.
1939-1951- World War 2 began for France after Germany invaded them. Therefore France declared war. It was hard fought and again France was heavily damaged. One of the most famous parts of this war for the French was their liberation on the Beach of Normandy. It took a very long time for them to rebuild after World War II ended. The Treaty of Paris officially ended the war in 1951.
1958- The Fifth Republic is founded. This is the government that France still has in place today. It is fairly similar to the government in England, consisting of a President, Prime Minister, and a bicameral representative system.
1959- Charles De Gaulle becomes President of the fifth republic in France. He was a general in the French Army and highly influential in the government both before, during, and after his presidency.
2007- Nicolas Sarkozy elected President of France. He lives a very controversial life. His politics are very conservative, and his position in government was very secure. He had a 60% majority in the National Assembly. However, when the world economy went into a Recession in 2008, France was affected as well and Sarkozy lost power.
2012- Francois Hollande elected President of France. He was the first Socialist president to be elected in French History.
